Dating from the early part of the 17th century,
the Red Lion Inn is an immaculately kept
hostelry with many traditional features and a
friendly greeting from leaseholder Gary Thompson and
his staff. It excels in all aspects - as a much-loved
local, as a place to seek out for good food and as a base
for touring the Furness Peninsula. The inn is open from 4 to
11 Monday to Thursday, from noon to midnight Friday
and Saturday and from noon to 10.30 on Sunday. Well-kept
ales, including Black Sheep Bitter and Ruddles County,
have earned the inn a Cask Marque recommendation, and
the food produced in the kitchens bring appreciative diners
from near and far.
The menu offers something for everyone: classics
like fish & chips, superb steaks from Coopers Farm in Leece;
almost forgotten favourites such as corned beef hash patties;
seafood specials; modern classics such as chargrilled tuna or
sizzling Chinese-style duck; and the likes of lemon thyme
and asparagus risotto for vegetarians. Booking is advisable
on Friday and Saturday evenings. For guests staying awhile
the Red Lion has seven excellent bedrooms - four en suite,
two on the ground floor, two in a purpose-built extension. All
are welcome to join in the Thursday night quiz..
