Glenville House was built in traditional
Lakeland stone in 1888 as a gentleman's residence. Now
the most civilised of hotels, with many original features, it stands on the main road
halfway between the centre of Windermere and the Lake
at Bowness-on-Windermere. Rachel and Paul Wright, who came here in April 2006, have made this a very special place and are already attracting
repeat visitors - and a look at the comments in the visitors' book shows why.
The guest accommodation consists of six
superbly appointed bedrooms, one on the ground floor, all
looking immaculate after a major refurbishment at the
beginning of 2007. Four rooms are designated superior, two
de luxe; all have television and welcome tray, and the
top-of-the-range rooms also CD players. Thoughtful little
extras complete the picture, helping to turn an enjoyable stay into
a memorable one. This is a great part of the world for
getting out and about, and if wet weather should arrive,
the house has ample washing and drying facilities.
Breakfast starts with a selection from the help-yourself buffet and follows with an excellent choice
of cooked-to-order options.
There are not many parts of the country with more to offer the visitor, and among the
almost endless of opportunities are walking, cycling, fishing, boating and steamer trips on the
Lake, discovering the world of Beatrix Potter and taking a trip on a steam railway. And when
complete relaxation is the order of the day Glanville has a quiet garden that's a perfect spot to unwind
and think how delightful it is to be away from the hustle and bustle of life back in the city. The
house, which is open all year round, has a large private car park. All the major cards are accepted.
