On a working farm in a quiet rural setting three miles from Penrith,
Hornby Hall offers the very best in gracious country house
accommodation. The Grade II listed property dates from
1550, when it was built of local red sandstone by
Edward Birbeck, and today's guests will find a perfect combination of original
features, antique furnishings and up-to-date amenities. The accommodation
consists of five main en suite bedrooms and two delightful singles reached up a
spiral staircase in the tower. All the rooms face south, overlooking the lovely
garden. The chief day rooms are a dining room in the 16th century hall, with a
sandstone floor and large open fireplace, and a very pleasant sitting room.
A cooked-to-order breakfast starts the day, packed
lunches are available, and a traditional
three-course evening meal (book in advance) features lamb and game from the farm and fruit
and vegetables from their own gardens. Fishing is available on
a two-mile stretch of the River Eamont between mid-March
and the end of September, and the hall can be booked for fishing
or shooting parties or for entertaining guests in the
wonderful private house ambience. The imposing remains of
Brougham Castle, the craft shops and workshops in Brougham hall and
the lovely old Parish Curch of St Ninian are all nearby.
