The huge red lion plastered on the front leaves visitors in no doubt that they've arrived at the
Red Lion Hotel. It began life in the early years of
the 18th century as a coaching inn, when it was an important stopping place on what was then
the main Whitehaven-Barrow road. John Walker, who took the reins here in 1998, has expended
lots of time, effort and enthusiasm in a major refurbishment programme that has restored the old
place to its pristine style and elegance, making it a splendid place to meet for a drink, to relax over a
meal or to spend a few days discovering the many attractions in and around Egremont.
The bar is open all day, every day for drinks, which include a good selection of draught
and bottle beers and lagers, cider, stout, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. John Smiths
Bitter, Fosters, Carlsberg and Kronenbourg are among the favourites with the regular patrons. The
drinks can be enjoyed on their own over a chat or to accompany the hearty home-cooked food that
the Red Lion serves every lunchtime and evening.
For guests staying awhile, the hotel has 11 rooms for B&B, varying from simple and
homely with shared facilities to top-of-the-range en suite rooms, and the tariff varies
accordingly. Egremont, set among the low hills of the Ehen Valley, is a small town with a lot of history,
and well worth spending time to explore at leisure. Chief among the nearby attractions are the
Castle, the Florence Mine Heritage Centre and the Lowes
Court gallery with its changing fine art exhibitions. The
town also hosts a number of unique annual events, including
a medieval festival, Crab Fayre Day in September and
the World Gurning Championships. As well as being a
great place for a drink, a meal and a touring base, the Red
Lion is also one of Egremont's social centres.
Entertainment, usually in the from of discos, brings a young crowd
at regular weekends, and at the back of the hotel is
a spacious function suite that's a popular venue for
private parties.
