Fine food and superb guest accommodation are two of the assets of the
Old Posting House, which stands alongside the A5086 three miles
south of the A66 and Cockermouth. Mike Peat, who previously ran a pub in Bradford, took over
the reins here in 2003 and lost no time in making improvements at this grand old place. A major extension is providing a new dining area that
brings the number of covers to 110 - and at busy times every one of them is needed, so popular has
the inn become, not just with the local community but
also with the many tourists who flock to this part of
the world, particularly in the summer; booking is recommended for all meals.
Local produce features prominently on the main printed menu, served
every lunchtime and evening, and the specials board.
Dishes on the latter might include variations on
haddock (battered, poached or stuffed with tuna
and prawns), ham shank with a BBQ sauce, chicken
with bacon and leeks in a stilton sauce, grilled
swordfish, roast pork or poached salmon with prawns and mushrooms in a white wine sauce. Mike has
also brought on stream four upstairs guest bedrooms with walk-in showers and flat-screen TVs.
Built some 300 years ago as a stopping place in coaching days, this splendid hostelry was
for many years called The Beehive. When alterations were in progress many years ago, the
builders working on one of the walls found the ancient village posting boxes - large boxes for the
wealthy, smaller ones for the ordinary folk. The find was authenticated by English Heritage, who
insisted that the premises should return to their old name. Those old boxes take pride of place on
display in the bar, which also features extensive collections of plates and teapots.
