The Victoria Hotel was built around 1850,
when the railway arrived here, so naturally it was
called the Railway Hotel. It stands off the A595
coastal road beside the main West Coast line, and
the occasional train still stops here on its way
to Barrow or Carlisle. New tenants Dave and Karen brought 30 years' experience with them
when they took over the lease in June 2007, and their expertise and enthusiasm is already winning
the place many friends, as a place to meet for a convivial drink, to
relax over a meal or to provide a start point for
exploring the region. The bar is open every lunchtime
and evening and all day on Sunday, and Jennings Bitter is a favourite
tipple, to quench a thirst or to accompany a snack or
a meal. Karen makes fine use of local produce for her tasty, wholesome,
well-priced food, which includes a good variety of classic pub dishes such
as Cumberland sausages, steak & ale pie,
lasagne, liver & bacon, chilli con carne, curries and
the always-in-demand fish specials.
Pub hours are 12 to 2 and from 4.30 Monday to Friday, 12 to 2 and from 6 on Saturday
and from 12 onwards on Sunday; food is served every lunchtime and evening. The
guest accommodation at the Victoria, available throughout the year, consists of six excellent
upstairs rooms, including some suitable for families. The nearby coast and the endless acres of
countryside offer many visitor attractions. Among the closest is Drigg Dunes nature reserve on the dunes
and salt marshes by the River Irt; the dunes command fine views across to the Lakeland mountains
and fells, and the reserve itself is home to what is believed to be Europe's largest colony of
black-headed gulls.
