The Black Cock is a top-of-the-range inn
offering the very best in hospitality, food and accommodation. The 16th century building
stands in the heart of the attractive little town
of Broughton-in-Furness with glorious Lakeland scenery close at hand. This much-loved inn is
full of history, charm and atmosphere, and in summer window boxes and hanging baskets make
a lovely colourful show. Behind the immaculate black-and-white frontage is just as
inviting, whatever the season: the lounge bar with roaring log fires and low-beamed ceiling has
a wonderful traditional ambience, and changes made by go-ahead landlord David Pike
since his arrival in October 2005, including a
very smart and stylish extension, have been
carefully planned to retain all the period appeal.
David's vigour and stock of ideas have contributed greatly to the popularity of the
old place, and the chef has won a strong and loyal following with his
mouth-watering menu
that combine pub classics with more exotic
options. Typical dishes - the choice changes
frequently - might include meat & potato pie with
mushy peas, lamb cutlets with all the trimmings, medallions of pork with a wholegrain
mustard sauce, Cajun chicken breast, vegetable curry
and Thai and Indian specials. Food is served in
the spacious dining area from 12 to 2 and 5 to 9, with extended hours in high season, and such
is the demand that booking is recommended for all meals to be sure of getting a table at the
time you want. Children are made very welcome, and they can even choose from their own
special menu.
The bar is open all day, seven days a week
for drinks, which include a selection of five real ales - Theakston's Best and Marston's
Pedigree are the regulars. The Black Cock is very
much part of the social scene in Broughton, and it's also a great place to stay when touring the
Furness and Cartmel Peninsulas, with five en suite
guest bedrooms that include a family suite.
There's excellent walking hereabouts, and many of
the Lake District's finest scenery lies within
easy reach, along with many historic features to discover. Broughton itself is well worth
taking time to explore, and it's good to know that when the day's activities are over the
Black Cock beckons with its special brand of hospitality.
The inn has a lovely secluded beer garden, tables and chairs at the front and plenty of
off-road parking.
