Blackwell is one of Britain's finest houses
from the turn of the last century and one of the country's most important examples of Arts
and Crafts architecture. It has survived in a
truly remarkable state of preservation and almost all
of its original decorative features are intact. Since
its restoration in 2001 the house has been filled with original furniture and artefacts from the
period, which once again re-awaken its beautiful interiors and bring them to life.
The house was built as a spectacular holiday home
for Sir Edward Holt, a wealthy Manchester brewer, and
is situated in a stunning Lakeland setting, above
Lake Windermere, looking across to the fells.
No Expense was spared in creating this romantic
retreat from the smog and grime of Victorian industrial life.
Everywhere you look inside there is beautiful
craftwork, using motifs drawn from the surrounding nature outside.
There are swaying flowers in the stained glass, leaves
and berries in the woodwork and stone, and peacocks and
wild flowers on the patterned wall coverings.
Blackwell houses an important and growing collection of both furniture and artefacts from
the Arts & Crafts Movement, including pottery, metalwork and examples of carvings.
As well as being a perfect work of art in itself, Blackwell provides the perfect setting
for changing exhibitions of the highest quality applied arts and crafts. Other attractions here include
a tea room, serving a selection of freshly prepared meals and snacks, and a book and gift shop.
