Brantwood is the most beautifully situated
house in the Lake District. It enjoys the finest lake
and mountain views in England and there is no
other house in the district with such a diversity
of cultural associations. The home of John Ruskin from 1872 until his death in 1900, Brantwood became an intellectual powerhouse and one of
the greatest literary and artistic centres in Europe. Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Marcel Proust and
Frank Lloyd Wright can all be numbered amongst Ruskin's disciples.
The house is filled with Ruskin's drawings and watercolours, together with much of his
original furniture, books and personal items. The video presentation and special displays provide
a fascinating insight into the work of this great man and his life in a Victorian country house.
Every Thursday during the season there'll be
lace making demonstrations and readings from Ruskin's writings are performed regularly
in the study. An excellent bookshop specialises in Ruskin and related art and literature.
Brantwood's Estate comprises of 250 acres of gardens, pastures, ancient woods
and high moors. Experience Ruskin's legacy and inspiration among eight distinctive
gardens, which have been lovingly restored. Walk among beautifully scented azaleas
and bluebells or marvel at magnificent views.
