Eleven generations of the same family have lived at Dalemain over the last 300 years, so, as the guide will tell you, this is a much loved family home. Dalemain began life as a pele tower in the 12th century, with additions in the 14th and 16th centuries. Finally, the impressive Georgian east front was completed in 1744, some 65 years after Sir Edward Hasell's purchase of the property. The home is now in the hands of the Hasell-McCosh family.

Guided tours are offered in the mornings, by timed ticket, but in the afternoons visitors can walk around at their own speed. The Georgian entrance hall, Chinese room and dining room have plenty of family portraits, ceramics and period furniture. 16 sheets of hand-painted wallpaper came in tea clippers from China in 1757 for the Chinese room.

A change of centuries takes you through the servant's passage into the Norman pele tower where there's a display of uniforms, photographs and medals devoted to the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. Upstairs the fretwork room has a 16th century plaster ceiling, oak panelling and part of a 17th century diary written by Lady Anne Clifford.

Then enjoy the delightful 5 acre plantsman's garden set against the picturesque splendour of the Lakeland Fells and parkland. Walk around the richly planted herbaceous borders, the rose walk with nearly 200 old fashioned roses and take in the views on the glorious woodland walk above Dacre beck.
