Opened in 1991, Lakeland Wildlife Oasis
quickly established itself as one of the Lake
District's premier visitor attractions. "Half Zoo,
half Museum, and totally fascinating" the Oasis
takes visitors on an amazing journey through the
world of wildlife using a unique combination of live animals and imaginative "hands-on"
computer displays. Visitors can drape a snake around their
neck, exchange inquisitive glances with a Ruffled Lemur or
a beautifully poised Meerkat squatting on its haunches,
and admire creatures rarely seen in captivity such as Flying
Foxes and Poison Arrow Frogs. Or you can just relax in the
tropical hall, colourful with free-flying birds, bats and butterflies. Many rare
species have found a secure home here, amongst them the fossa, of
which there are only 44 in captivity. Friendly staff are always on hand to answer questions and let you meet some
of the inhabitants face to face!
The Oasis was established by Dave and Jo Marsden, both of
whom were animal keepers at Chester Zoo before setting up this popular
family attraction. It is open every day of the year, (except for Christmas Day
and Boxing Day), there is access throughout for the disabled, and
other amenities include picnic areas, a snack bar and a gift shop. For parties
of more than 30 people, it is advisable to book ahead and the Oasis will
then provide a tour guide.
