One of the very best attractions in the North of England, the
Dock Museum tells in fascinating detail the story of Barrow and its rapid
growth from a small fishing village in the
early-19th century to a town famed throughout the world
for its industrial production and innovation. It
was once the biggest iron and steel centre in the world and a
major shipbuilder. Its first iron steamship was launched here in
1873, and in 1901 the Barrow shipyard built Britain's first
submarine - and in 2007 it is once again building state-of-the-art subs.
The spectacular modern museum was built over an
original Victorian dock, occupying a landscaped waterfront site
with walkways linked to the Cumbria Coastal way, a picnic area
and an adventure playground. Inside are exciting
interactive displays, a range of model ships, film shows, photographs and access to many images from
the nationally important collection of glass negatives. It
also hosts a vibrant programme of exhibitions and
events throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy a wide range
of snacks and hot meals in the coffee shop. Parking
and admission are free at the Museum, which is open
daily except Monday in season (10 to 4.30) and Monday
and Tuesday out of season (10.30 to 4).
