High above Dunoon, in two acres of grounds, you will find the quite superb four star
Abbot's Brae Hotel. Originally built in 1843 as a holiday
retreat for a wealthy Glasgow glass merchant, it is now
a small, family-run establishment that offers
luxurious guest rooms, a warm welcome and a friendly, unfussy ambience. Many of the building's
original features have been retained, both inside and out, and it manages to combine an air of elegance
with informality and a relaxed atmosphere that could almost be a home-from-home.
It is owned and run by the
husband and wife team of Christine and
Colin Macpherson,
who are determined to build on the hotel's already
envious reputation as one of the
premier establishments in Argyll. It boasts eight fully
en suite rooms, each one luxuriously furnished and decorated. One room is on the ground
floor, three on the first floor and four on the top floor
- and the higher you go, the more stunning the
views out over the Firth of Clyde. All
are extremely spacious, and come in a variety of
sizes to suit most needs. They are individually
named after places within the Cowal Penisula, and
have photographs and prints connected with the history of it's namesake.
Dining at the Abbot's Brae is an experience not
to be missed. The cuisine is traditional Scottish,
with possibly the hint of foreign influences
now and
then. Only the finest and freshest of local produce is
used wherever possible, guaranteeing maximum flavour.
The menu contains such dishes as local wild venison
pate, bacon and lentil soup, juicy steaks with all
the trimmings, steamed fillet of Loch Fyne salmon,
slow cooked lamb shank and a host of other
marvellous dishes that are sure to please. Plus there is a
fine selection of wines to complement your meal exactly.
The Abbot's Brae Hotel sits close to the ferry terminal connecting Dunoon to Gourock and
the Scottish motorway system, and Glasgow is only
30 miles away as the crow flies. Plus there is all that the
Cowal Peninsula - one of Argyll's
loveliest areas - has to offer. Historic sites - old towns such as Inveraray - marvellous coastal scenery
- they're all here and waiting for you, as are golf courses, fishing rivers and great walking
country. You just can't afford not to stay at the Abbot's Brae Hotel!
