Ardfern is an extremely attractive small village in beautiful surroundings nestling on the shores of Loch Craignish, a sea loch popular with yachtsmen. The Crafty Kitchen is in the centre of the village, and is housed in what was, up until 14 years ago, a general store. Three years ago it was taken over by Taryn Blair, who has lived in the village for over nine years. Now it is a justly famous establishment selling good food at realistic prices.

It is open each year from the beginning of April until the end of October from Tuesday to Sunday each week, and on Saturday and Sunday only in November and December. Taryn is determined to offer imaginative meals at wonderful prices, and uses only the finest and freshest of local produce wherever possible in all the dishes created by her. Argyll has a number of producers providing a range of foods from beef, lamb, fish and shellfish to organic vegetables and fruits. In this way, the local economy thrives, and you are assured of food that is full of flavour and beautifully home-cooked on the premises.

The ambience of the place is relaxed and friendly, with an interior that makes good use of pine furniture and timber flooring. In the summer months you can even eat out of doors. You can choose from printed menus or from a daily specials board that takes advantage of whatever local produce is in season. The dishes are cooked with imagination and flair, but always with due regard to the fresh flavour of the produce itself. The dinner menu contains such dishes as Islay scallops with either lemon, butter and parsley or cream, horseradish and chives, cured meat platter, which has smoked local fish and various cured meats, home-made salmon fishcakes, and beef burgers using meat form a local farm. There is also a menu for snacks and light lunches and one for puddings.

The Crafty Kitchen is aptly named, as it also sells a great range of craft and toy items, some of them made locally. Here you can browse for a gift or souvenir without obligation.

This is a great place to eat while in this beautiful part of Argyll, and you can't go far wrong if you stop off and sample the great food on offer!
