Hidden deep within the mountain of Ben Cruachan on the shores of Loch Awe is Cruachan Power Station. Here, a short distance from Oban, you can discover one of the hidden wonders of the Highlands. A power station buried one kilometre below ground. At its centre lies a massive cavern, high enough to house the Tower of London! Here enormous turbines convert the power of water into electricity, available to you in your home at the flick of a switch. Take an unforgettable journey into Ben Cruachan and find out how power is generated. Experienced guides will lead you along a tunnel cut from solid rock. A coach will transport you into a different world, a place so warm that sub-tropical plants grow.

Find the nerve centre of the station and understand how the power of water from Loch Awe is harnessed to provide a rapid response to sharp rises in demand for electricity such as at mealtimes. A generator can go from standstill to an output of 100,000 kilowatts in two minutes to provide as much electricity as necessary.

Back on the surface, the visitor centre has many things to see and do. The Exhibition includes touch screens and demonstrates the way in which power will continue to be generated in the future. To finish off, there is a lochside cafeteria and gift shop. Open all year 9am-5pm.
