There is no doubt that Ballachulish House and Golf Course is one of the best and most famous establishments of its kind in Scotland. It has five coveted stars from VisitScotland, five diamonds from the AA, and a restaurant that has been awarded two rosettes for its superb food. It's no wonder that it prides itself on being world class and a `truly unique experience'.

The house is set in its own grounds on the shores of Loch Linnhe, and was built in 1640. It became the HQ for Captain Campbell, who led the troops that massacred the MacDonalds in Glencoe, so it is steeped in history. It now boasts eight luxurious en suite rooms, each one individually furnished in the Georgian style. Though there is elegance and good taste aplenty, the hotel still has that unstuffy, welcoming atmosphere that leads to complete relaxation, and older children are more than welcome. It is open all year round, and you can stay on a B&B or dinner, B&B basis. You are also welcome to visit if you just wish a superb lunch or dinner.

The food, of course, is outstanding, with a Michelen award-winning menu. The cuisine is Scottish, with French influences. Local produce is always used in the kitchens, where the chefs create dishes that show imagination and flair, while still remaining simple and true to the original flavours. The five course table d'hôte menu contains such dishes as a tartlet of peat-smoked fish with wild mushrooms crusted with Mull-cheddar rarebit, rosette of prime Highland beef glazed with Arran mustard and herd crumble, rack of Skye lamb with spinach and wild mushroom face, and cranachan set in a cage of spun sugar with fresh Highland raspberries.

This is dining at its finest, and is an ideal way to celebrate a special occasion such as birthday or anniversary. The golf course itself was opened in 2001, and is open to non-members. It is a par 68/65 course of 5038 yards, and presents a unique challenge to golfers at all levels. The clubhouse has a bar and grill, and you can enjoy simpler, but no less beautifully cooked, fare, such as soup, baked jacket potatoes, Angus steak burgers with chips, and home baking. These facilities are open to non-members.

The establishment holds a civil marriage license, so you can tie the knot in one of the most luxurious and unique locations in Scotland. So f you're in Argyll, don't miss Ballachulish House and Golf Course!
