Borvemor Cottages offer 4 unique
self-catering properties, all on the southwestern seaboard of
the Isle of Harris. Borvemor Blackhouse, or Tigh
Dubh as it is called in Gaelic, was built in 1993 and is
the first traditional "Blackhouse" to be built for over
a century. Using the age-old materials of stone, wood and thatch, the classic shape of the dry-stone island house took shape in just 32 days
and was completed within three months. There are concessions to modern
day requirements so Borvemor Blackhouse
does have running water, electricity and excellent plumbing! The
traditional features include a delightful Dover
Stove complete with oven and a cosy box bed in a curtained recess off the living
room with a box bed above which can be used for extra members of the family.
The comfortable bedroom has a king size bed and antique furniture.
You might prefer either Stable Cottage or Byre Cottage,
two comfortable self-contained semi-detached cottages created from
a superbly converted steading. Stable Cottage has three bedrooms: one double room and two
twin rooms with bunk beds. The living room is spacious with comfortable seating and
an open plan dining area at the other end. The modern fitted kitchen includes an
electric cooker, a microwave and a washing machine/dryer.
The other half of the steading houses the Byre Cottage which sleeps six and
has two bedrooms, one of which is a double /family room and the other has a bunk
bed and a single bed. The modern fitted kitchen/living room is in an adjoining wing to
the bedrooms, linked by a corridor opening on to a sunny conservatory.
The fourth property available through Borvemor Cottages is the two-storey Vallay
House which was recently built up from the walls of the late
18th century Borvemor House. It is now fully modernised and provides
self-catering accommodation for 5 or 6 people.
Vallay House is at the corner of a dry stone
walled garden and the sitting area at the back
faces south and is very sheltered. Sun yourself! Access to the machair land and
glorious Atlantic beach is a few minutes walk away
on the west coast of Harris. Highland Cattle and Blackface Sheep are on the 30-acre
working croft surrounding Vallay House and there is
a trout loch just a quarter of an hour's hill walk away. There is also an excellent 9-hole
links golf course just one mile away.
