Hidden in the Clywedog Valley, two miles west of Wrexham can be found the
real beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Bersham's old Victorian school is now
the centre for discovering the industrial heritage of Wrexham. Permanent displays feature
the history behind John Wilkinson's ironworks and the later steel industry of Brymbo.
Some of the most innovative ideas of the
Industrial Revolution were conceived here in Bersham by
John "Iron Mad" Wilkinson.
The remains of John Wilkinson's 18th century blast furnace and associated buildings can be seen
at Bersham Ironworks. It is hard to believe a place
so unsung in the history books could have been so important. Industry comes alive in the Heritage
Centre when the working forge is used by local students
and blacksmiths. The centre hosts a lively programme
of temporary exhibitions and events to appeal to all
the family.
