Llangollen in North Wales is famous for hosting the International Eisteddfod at the beginning
of July each year but is also renowned for the Llangollen
Railway that has restored part of the former cross-country line that once
served the town. The railway was closed by British Railways in the 1960s
but by 1975 the first signs of a revival could be seen. In 1981
the dedication of enthusiasts was rewarded and the first passenger train
left Llangollen Station to make the short ¾ mile journey as far as Pentrefelin.
Since that time the work of restoring the railway has continued
and trains now run for 7½ miles up the Dee Valley. Llangollen
Station, where many passengers start their journey, is situated
in the centre of the town and easily accessible from the
A5 Trunk Road. There are intermediate stations
at Berwyn and Glyndyfrdwy before the train reaches
the current western terminus at Carrog. The village
and River Dee are a few minutes walk from the Station.
Beyond Carrog the old trackbed stretches into the distance and work is currently in progress to
reinstate the remaining 2½ miles to Corwen.
