Located in a quiet lane off Cardigan's main shopping street, the Castle Café & Cellar Bar occupies a sturdy stone building more than 200 years old that stands close to the ruins of Cardigan Castle. Owned and run by April and Stephen Greenhalgh, the café has a cosy cottage-style ambience and offers an enticing menu of home-booked dishes which are based as far as possible on local produce.

One of the most popular dishes _ a notable winter warmer but served throughout the year _ is cawl, a classic Welsh meat and vegetable stew. But there are plenty of other choices, both on the printed menu and amongst the daily specials. The café is licensed and all major credit cards apart from Diners are accepted. The café is on two floors: upstairs there's seating for 36 in a delightfully atmospheric place with bare stone walls and dark wooden furniture. The fare served here is uncomplicated but hearty food (all prepared on the premises) and drinks, all served by staff who are enthusiastic, eager to please, friendly and efficient. There is a fixed menu each day that takes advantage of wholesome, fresh local produce wherever possible. There is always a vegetarian option and by prior arrangement, a vegan meal can also be made available.

Downstairs, the Cellar Bar can accommodate up to 60 and it's here that live music is performed five nights a week from 8pm. The music ranges from rock to jazz, from acoustic to folk, from soul to blues. At least four nights a week customers can take part in events such as poetry nights and quizzes. The entry charge of £5 for downstairs includes a plate of food and entry into a raffle.

The café is open from 8.30am each day, until midnight each day except Wednesday when it closes at 4pm, and Sunday when it closes at 3pm. April and Stephen also own Gandalf's Garden just across the road which sells a fascinating variety of unusual gifts and also has an art gallery. They also own nearby Middle Earth which sells everything from earthy fabrics and lovely silks to quirky jewellery, alternative products and ornaments.
