Aberystwyth Cliff Railway, the only one in Wales, was opened in 1896 and rises 430 feet in its 778 feet of undulating track. It travels at a sedate four miles per hour, and passengers arriving at the summit enjoy superb views over the bay and, inland, to the Cambrian Mountains. The camera obscura is on the summit, along with a gift shop and a café serving afternoon teas and home-cooked snacks. The railway is managed as a charitable trust by Margaret Walters, who was once a driver on it. Trains run every few minutes from 10 to 5 mid-March to early November (10 to 6 in July and August).
