If you cross the road from the railway station at Deganwy and enter Café T'Air, it's like stepping back into the Victorian era. This superb establishment with its iron, station-style awning and bow windows is an absolute delight. The interior is furnished in the style of a Victorian drawing room, complete with vintage fireplace and lots of ornaments and knick-knacks. Owners Bryan Hughes and Keith Hallowes have been here since 1995 and have established a glowing reputation for their home cooking and hospitality. Smartly dressed in white shirts and black bow ties, they intensify the sense of visiting an earlier age. Keith is the chef and his menu is deeply enticing. Who could resist the full Afternoon Tea, replete with cucumber sandwiches, Welsh tea bread, and scone with jam and cream? Then there are the wonderful cakes - Lemon Stem Ginger, perhaps, or Coffee & Walnut - and more than half a dozen different kinds of scone, freshly baked each day.

In addition to the teatime treats, the menu also offers a good selection of light lunches, salads, a home-made soup, hot dishes of the day, and toasted or regular sandwiches. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Keith also adds his famous Steak & Mushroom Pie to the list. The dessert selection offers a memorable apple pie with apricot and sultanas in almond pastry with cream or ice cream. Or you could sample the delicious Plas Farm Ices of Anglesey.

Such is the popularity of this charming tearoom which has just 26 places, it is advisable to book ahead to avoid disappointment. The café is open from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Mature children are welcome; only cash and cheques are accepted.
