A handsome foursquare stone building dating back to 1821,
The Builders Arms is a welcoming old hostelry full of charm
and character. It's owned and run by the Guest family - David, his wife Tilly and
their daughter Chardonnay. David has been a chef for some 12 years so good food is taken
very seriously here. In the elegant restaurant
with its dark wood furniture, David's menu offers an enticing choice of wholesome
and appetising food. Amongst the starters you'll find a home-made soup of the day, Wild Mushroom Brioche and a tasty Antipasto Selection.
Main courses range from a Tournedos Rossini or Gressingham Duck Breast to a Seared Salmon
Salad and Lamb Noisettes. Vegetarians are well-catered for with dishes such as an oven-baked large
field mushroom filled with leeks and topped with
cheesy bread crumbs accompanied by spring onion crushed potatoes and rocket salad. In all the
dishes local produce is used wherever possible. Food
is served every lunchtime (noon until 2.30 or
3pm), and every evening from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Because of the restaurant's popularity, booking
on Friday and Saturday evenings and for Sunday
lunch is strongly recommended. On Sunday
lunchtimes, only traditional roasts are served. For the rest
of the week, the lunchtime menu offers a selection
of hot meals, (including Sausages and Mash made
with Francis's of Ludlow home-made sausages),
salads, sandwiches, hot baguettes, salads, jacket
potatoes and ploughman's. For the afternoon break, the
pub offers various home-made cakes to accompany your Cream or Afternoon Tea. Please note
that payment is by cheque or cash only.
The Guests have made their pub a lively place, hosting regular
Quiz Nights for charity, themed evenings (Spanish, Italian) and even
a children's Halloween Party.
The Builders Arms also offers comfortable accommodation in
3 guest bedrooms - 2 doubles and 1 twin - all of which are provided
with en suite facilities. Also available is a self-catering cottage to the rear
of the premises which sleeps 2 people. It is available all year round
and short breaks can be arranged.
Cross Gates village can be found 3 miles north of Llandrindod
Wells, at the junction of the A44 and A483.
