On the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors
coastline, with the Cleveland Way in front and the National Park boundary to the
rear, Estbek House enjoys a glorious setting in one of England's
prettiest villages. The house is Georgian, built around 1750, and hands-on
owners David Cross and Tim Lawrence have made it one of the finest restaurants
with rooms in the whole county.
The food here is absolutely outstanding, with
chef James and his team combining skill and flair at the highest level and
putting their personal stamp on every dish. Estbek's signature dish, and its
most popular fish dish, is fillet of fresh local halibut, pan-seared and served
with a wine sauce or a crab and crayfish sauce. The seafood selection, usually
including snapper, sea bass, red mullet and Nile perch, served with a King
scallop on a bed of crayfish tails, is a dish fit for a king, and other options - the list is long and mouthwatering! - include a classic steak au poivre,
seared duck fillet with a honeyed cherry reduction, and superb vegetarian dishes
such as a trio of spiced bean cakes or couscous stuffed mixed vegetables.
They're as passionate at Estbek about wine as
about food, and the selection includes a connoisseur list and a range of
excellent quality wines by the glass. There are two dining areas - one in bistro
style, the other more traditional, just right for a romantic candlelit dinner.
The guest accommodation at the house is also top-class, comprising three doubles
and a twin, all with flat-screen TV, CD player, alarm clock, hairdryer, tea &
coffee making facilities and a complimentary bathroom guest pack. The double
rooms have en suite showers, while the twin is fitted with a whirlpool spa bath.
Each room has pictures by local artists, most of local scenes.
The house was built for the manager of the
local alum works that once dominated the coastline, producing a substance that
was more valuable than gold; its main use was for fixing colours in fabrics.
Sandsend nestles between the coast and the Mulgrave Woods, with glorious sandy
beaches only 10 yards away and the two fantastic Mulgrave castles a short walk
away. It stands on the A174 a short drive or a pleasant walk along the beach to
Whitby.
