Castle Howard, winner of York Tourism
Bureau's `Out of Town Attraction of the Year' award, is now so much more than a
magnificent 18th century house with extensive collections and breathtaking
grounds featuring temples, lakes and fountains.
Historical characters, such as the original
architect, Sir John Vanbrugh and the 6th Countess, Lady Georgina provide a first
person observation of what life was like at Castle Howard. Other characters
include Widow Etty, whose husband was killed in an accident during the
construction of Castle Howard; the 18th century Governess awaiting the next
generation, busying herself with the tutorage of the young visitors; the 5th
Earl's Butler, who is a fountain of knowledge and good sense - just what is
needed to curb the rash spending of the Earl; the School Mistress, helping to
run the school relocated to Castle Howard during the Second World War, who can
be spotted covering `indecent` statues and ensuring the girls do not run down
the corridors.
The range of tours around the house and
gardens are very popular and include restoration and renovation; the great fire
of 1940; the haunts of Brideshead Revisited; the history of the Roses and
many more. There are various places to stop and enjoy refreshments and a plant
centre and tree nursery, both open for sales to the public. A varied programme
of events takes places throughout the year, including the Proms Spectacular and
Archaeology Weekends.
Open daily between February and November, a
land-train is available to transport visitors from the car park to the house and
there is disabled access to many parts.
