The Black Horse is a simply
outstanding place set in the picturesque village of Askwith, found high up off
the A65 between Ilkley and Otley. Dating back to 1860, this fine inn commands
magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. This distinctive pub is
pristine and comfortable. Leaseholder Paul Spencer was brought up in the
licensing trade, though this is his and his wife Carol's first venture as
licensees. They have been here since 2005 and have already built up an enviable
reputation for superb food and ales.
The restaurant seats 100, with extra seating
available on the spacious outdoor patio. All but one small dining area is
non-smoking. The restaurant is open at lunch (12-2 Monday to Saturday, 12-4
Sundays) and dinner (Tuesday to Saturday 6-9 p.m.). Booking is essential for the
fantastic Sunday carvery, and is also advisable for Friday and Saturday evenings
to avoid disappointment.
Guests choose off the printed menu and
blackboard specials from an extensive range of dishes with the best of
traditional and modern influences and inspiration: traditional fishcakes sit
alongside spring rolls, seafood pancakes, smoked salmon and prawn parcels,
deep-fried whitebait and Greek beef stifado, among many other tempting dishes.
There are also delicious summer salads and a choice of at least four vegetarian
dishes. All produce used is sourced locally and all dishes are home-made,
freshly cooked and expertly prepared and presented.
Askwith is a very pretty village worth
exploring in its own right, plus there's some great walking in the area, over
the open moorland from Brick House or Blubberhouses, for example, and this
excellent pub makes a perfect place to reward yourself with a truly special pint
and meal.
