Located in the centre of this village renowned for its `Martyrs' of 1834,
Tolpuddle Hall is a spacious Georgian building of 1750 that was enlarged
and re-modelled by the Victorians in 1860. For most
of its life, it was the residence of the vicars of the parish
of Tolpuddle; after World War II it became a
farmhouse, but when Paul Wright acquired the property in 1993
it was, in his words, "a total wreck". Over the years he
has completely renovated the house, furnishing its
rooms with st
ylish furniture, adding a conservatory and
creating delightful landscaped gardens to the front and rear.
There are 6 guest bedrooms, large enough to be called mini-apartments, all with en suite facilities, TV
and hospitality tray. The reception rooms are also
spacious and comfortable, and an appetising breakfast is included in the tariff.
A retired academic and self-confessed eccentric, Paul
offers specialist themed holidays exploring such topics as
local history or the life of Thomas Hardy and the
places associated with him. English as a Foreign
Language courses are available, and Paul, who is a Life Fellow of
the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, also offers
bird watching holidays.
