Fordingbridge's most famous resident was the flamboyant artist whose memory is perpetuated at The Augustus John pub and restaurant in Station Road. Although born in Wales, John spent most of the last thirty years of his life in Fordingbridge, a town he loved deeply. After his death in 1961, the townspeople reciprocated by erecting a full-sized bronze of the artist just below the old fording bridge. And in the pub that was one of his favourite watering holes and now bears his name there's a collection of his paintings as a permanent reminder of his life.

Dating back to the early 1800s, the Augustus John has an open plan bar and restaurant, with a non-smoking area, and for fair weather days a courtyard and beer garden. The excellent restaurant here boasts a Michelin good food guide recommendation for its cuisine and offers an extensive menu with something for everyone. Amongst the starters for example are authentic Thai dishes such as Tom Yum Goong (hot & sour soup with ginger, lemon grass, mushrooms and tiger prawns), and more traditional offerings like the Moules Mariniéres or Creamy Garlic Mushrooms. Main courses also offer a wide choice of traditional British dishes (Rack of Welsh Lamb, perhaps); tasty Thai dishes and vegetarian options such as Fussili Napolitano and Broccoli & Cauliflower Bake. Further choices are listed on the blackboard featuring daily changing specials how about Pork, Scrumpy & Apple Sausages with mustard mash and onion gravy? The board also lists fresh fish dishes of the day. To complement your meal, there's an extensive choice of wines, draught ales, lagers, ciders and other beverages.

The pub hosts regular live music events details on the website and is happy to cater for your own special occasions, whether it's a birthday, anniversary or wedding reception. The pub is also home to AJ Wheelers, a friendly cycling club whose members go for a weekly trip around the beautiful New Forest whether you're a beginner or an experienced cyclist you are welcome to join in.

If you are planning to stay in this pleasing little town, The Augustus John has 4 well-appointed guest rooms in converted stables at the rear. The 3 double and 1 twin room all have en suite facilities, colour television, tea and coffee-making equipment, and 24-hour residents' access.
