The Hidden Places of the Lake District & Cumbria
is a beautifully illustrated guide and explores the Lake
District and Cumbria in a relaxed narrative style. It
contains a wealth of interesting information on the history,
the countryside, the towns and villages and established
visitor attractions, but it also focuses on promoting the
lesser known places of interest and places to stay, eat and
drink.
The delightful county of Cumbria
in which the lakes reside is England's second largest
county, but surprisingly has a relatively small population
of only 490,000 people which is only slightly more numerous
than the city of Leeds. The Lake District is most famous
for its impressive mountain scenery but it also offers
visitors green rolling hills, fast flowing rivers, deep lush
forests and of course the enchanting and languid lakes.
Below the fells, peaceful country lanes meander through
beautiful little hamlets and tiny rural villages, many
steeped in history. This wonderful scenery is of course
celebrated by the "Lake Poets" - Wordsworth, Coleridge and
Southey. Apart from the Lake District, Cumbria offers gentle
moorland, craggy coastal headlands, scattered woodlands and
a fascinating history and cultural heritage.
