The Hidden Places of Northumberland & Durham is a
beautifully illustrated guide and explores Northumberland
and Durham in a relaxed narrative style. It contains a
wealth of interesting information on the history, the
countryside, the towns and villages and established visitor
attractions, but it also focuses on promoting the lesser
known places of interest and places to stay, eat and drink.
Northumberland has much to offer
the visitor with the Cheviot Hills, the Kielder Forest Park,
Hadrian's Wall and the North Northumberland Heritage Coast
which, of course, includes Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island and
the Farne Islands. County Durham is blessed with an
incredibly strong history that runs deep with industrial
heritage. The landscape still shows evidence of coal mining
traditions, but the spoil heaps and pit heads have now all
but disappeared. The county encompasses the beautiful and
historic city of Durham and, like its northern neighbour,
has an impressive number of castles, churches and historic
houses.
