Anyone
interested in unusual churches should make the
short trip from Hutton-le-Hole to St Mary's
Church at Lastingham, about 3 miles to the east.
The building of a monastery here in the 7th
century was recorded by no less an authority

Said to be
the second largest village in Britain,
Pilling boasts no fewer than five churches.
One of them, Old St John's is notable as
a'time-awrp0 church, virtually unchanged since
its completion in 1717. Flagged floors,
pews and box-pews of unvarnished oak, and a
three decker pulpit have all survived unscathed
thanks to the building of a new church in the
village in 1887.

Perhaps
the most unusual visitor attraction in Ambleside
is the Homes of Football, described by the
Sunday Times as a national treasure. It
began as a travelling exhibition of football
photographs and memorabilia, but now has a
permanent home in Lake Road.
